Are they to protect you from injuries or not?
Check out the USA Powerlifting forum and what knee wraps are doing for lifters during squats.......

Early in my career, I looked at knee wraps as something that gives you both support and an edge (recoil) when lifting weights. I've also approached the use of gear as something that should only be used when it could make the difference between missing or making that one lift. Strength athletes should train to get strong and build supporting muscle. And support gear should not be used to cover up an injury. Though we're all probably guilty of breaking this rule many times over in our lifting career.
But, over time, attitudes have changed as well as the gear. Now it is more is better. The gear, including the wraps, has evolved to the point where a lifter can lift and add significant pounds to a lift just by donning wraps, shirt or suit. I have to think that the risk of injury is even greater as a result. No longer is the emphasis place on support as much as it is on how much carry over can the gear give me. In time, the wear and tear on joints and other body parts is going to show.
I've stayed away from this debate and have viewed it from afar. I support powerlifting and its lifters and am willing to assist a fellow lifter in however they chose to lift. But personally, I find greater satisfaction from lifting raw.

Jim, Nice post....I've have never been a big fan of equipment. I'm enjoying powerlifting a lot more without the stress of equipment. And knee wraps have never been my friend at all.

Jim, You know that when I wrapped my kness I hit bigger squats. However since I started training without them my squats are almost what they were before at Super heavy weight with wraps and know I am training at 242. In a short time I think they will pass those numbers. I t could be that the wraps were hindering my overalll gains in core strength. I experience no problems with my knees at this time.
